Dave McGillivray has done and seen more in the world of endurance sport than most of us can imagine. In 1978, he ran 3500 miles across the USA in 80 days, raising money and awareness for the Jimmy Fund, and in doing so, became the first person credited with combining sporting events with raising money. He’s continued that tradition, and over the last 40 years, his events have raised $300 million for charity.
In 1980, he raced the Ironman World Championships and finished 14th, the year that Dave Scott won for the first time. He established the 2nd Iron distance race in the World in Cape Cod. He has gone on to become the race director of the Boston Marathon, and has directed over 1,300 events in his career. Oh, and he’s run the last 48 Boston marathons consecutively. To do that, he runs them on his own, at night, after everyone else has gone home. He’s completed the World Marathon Challenge - 7 marathons, 7 days, on 7 different continents. He’s also recently recovered from open heart surgery following a diagnosis of coronary heart disease, and he now raises awareness amongst the endurance community of how important it is that we all get regular heart check ups as we get a little older, and not just assume that because we’re fit, our hearts are healthy.
I loved this conversation. Dave is by turns open, warm, funny, reflective, and humble about his incredible achievements. I think you’ll love it too.
